I was recruited for a role with Volvo Trucks to redesign their search interface to integrate servicing electric trucks at their dealerships.
Throughout this project, I also provided changes to the information gathering process to quickly link truck dispatchers to different dealer features and amenities to guide their drivers to a destination that's perfectly tailored to their needs.
The redesigned Volvo Trucks Dealer Locator brings a new vision to the map with the addition of distinct iconography, brand colors, and content reorganization. This new layout has expanded to other sub brands of Volvo Trucks, including Mack Trucks and Renault Trucks.
Over the course of this project, the rapid pace and short schedule were challenging to overcome, especially with creating nearly a dozen new screens for desktop and mobile devices.
I overcame these struggles with my team through collaborating with my teammate, dividing up our responsibilities and sharing our progress with each other on a daily basis to make the most of our time.
RESEARCH
Through workshops with Volvo, we were able to identify the new features desired for the new site, as well as how to organize their car dealerships.
DESIGN
I started first with designing a series of new icons to better reflect each dealership type.
Then, I consolidated all the information onto a singular sidebar with interactive buttons to get directions, call the dealership, or expand to learn more about amenities.
FEEDBACK AND REVISIONS
We presented multiple sidebar designs to Volvo through several Client Review sessions, each iteration making adjustments based on their feedback. Finally, we completed the feedback sessions, received approval, and turned over all design documentation to Front End.
The changes were then implemented and are now published on websites across Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks, and Renault trucks.
VOLVO DEALER LOCATOR ANNOTATED SCREENS
To help transition the design from a prototype to production-ready assets, my partner and I had to annotate each element of the design for fonts, colors, and spacing. We also provided the custom icons we created that were tailored to each sub-brand of Volvo.
Volvo implemented our designs on the customer-facing Trucks site.
"As part of the Volvo and Mack Trucks Dealer Locator project, we were tasked with:
1) representing dealers who now provide services for electric trucks;
2) customizing each brand’s Google Maps-based userinterface for easier use; and
3) refining the layout to create a smoother user experience for both office dispatchers (desktop) and on-the-road truck drivers(mobile).
Given the two-week turnaround, both the internal team members and the Client were impressed that we elevated the immediate needs of the user, restructured the content hierarchy, and took advantage of each brand’s design system in theming their respective user interfaces. The Project Lead and Client were open and receptive toJosh’s ideas and recommendations, and came back with very few changes."
